Most excellent news from Colombia yesterday, the rescue of former Colombian presidential candidate Ingrid Betancourt and 3 American military contractors held hostage by FARC guerrillas.
Since I refuse to pay $12.50 for 5 words or whatever outrageously exorbitant fee that mighty overseers of all things copyright law related, here is the scenario (from multiple sources) in sum:
Betancourt and the 3 contractors were gathered up and forced into an unmarked helicopter with a crew wearing Che Guevara shirts (how appropriate) with the belief they were simply being transferred to another camp. Betancourt noticed a local rebel commander whose nom de guerre was Cesar and who was one of her torturers, lying on the floor stripped and bound.
A crew member turned to her and said,
“We’re the national army…You’re free.”
The 3 American contractors, Marc Gonsalves, Thomas Howes and Keith Stansell all returned safely to their families in Texas.
Bravo to the Colombian military forces on the perfect execution of this rescue operation.
